The trial, which was funded by Diabetes UK and led by experts at Newcastle University and the University of Glasgow, saw patients follow the Cambridge Weight Plan – a weight management programme which tailors diets specifically to individual needs. According to the study, the results confirm remission of type 2 diabetes is closely linked to weight loss. Sixty-four per cent of participants who lost over 10kg were still in remission at two years. Patients regained some weight between the first and second year, which was expected, but those in remission after the first year, and who stayed in remission, had a greater average weight loss than those who did not stay in remission.

Those who stayed in remission after the first year lost 15.5kg on average, while those who did not stay in remission lost 12kg on average.

Participants were defined as in remission if they had long-term blood glucose levels of less than 48mmol/mol, without needing to use any medication.

The results of the trial, named the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), have been published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.
