Study examines ESRD risk in type 2 diabetes

A study in Diabetes Care showed a 0.29% cumulative risk for end-stage renal disease at 10 years and a 0.74% risk at 20 years among patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, with men having a twofold higher risk than women. Finnish researchers used a cohort of 421,429 patients and found that patients ages 60 to 69 at diabetes diagnosis were at a 30% reduced ESRD risk, compared with those ages 40 to 49, primarily due to competing mortality.
