If your go-to takeaway of choice is an Indian, it’s best to choose a tandoori or tikka-based meal, as they’re baked and lower in fat, said Diabetes UK.

Boiled or steamed rice is always better for blood sugar than pilau or fried rice, and you should still fill your plate with salad and yogurt, it said.

Avoid naan bread – chapatti is a better choice – and you should aim to share the richer foods.

If you prefer a Chinese takeaway, the best food you could order would be a broth-based soup, said the charity.

Again, opt for steamed or fragrant rice, and close stir-fried vegetables as a side dish.

“Whether you’re grabbing lunch on the go, enjoying a Friday night takeaway or celebrating a special occasion at a restaurant, it’s great to eat a meal that you haven’t cooked yourself – and diabetes is no barrier to that,” said Diabetes UK.

“With a little knowledge, you can enjoy eating out as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

“If there is a choice of starters, think about which ones might be better for you.
